The customer says: “These were bought out of curiosity because I really like White Nights watercolours and wondered what the Masterclass gouache, made by the same company, would be like. I was especially intrigued that they are of high light fastness, unlike many gouaches on the market, and could, therefore, be used in work that is intended to be displayed.
They also represented an awful lot of paint for the money, 12 pots of 40ml is a large amount of paint when you consider that most gouaches come in tubes of 15ml to 20ml.
Swatched out straight from the pot they appeared as I expected – opaque and matte -but I was gratified to find that the paints are very highly pigmented and that the pigment itself is finely ground so you don’t get the grittiness you often find with gouaches.
The colours mix cleanly and rewet and lift easily from the palette if allowed to dry. (This was a relief as I had put far too much paint out !)
The magic began for me when I began to lighten the colours with the zinc white. The colours paled but did not become chalky, dull or lose their intensity. It was very easy to mix close approximations of the more opaque watercolours – such as cerulean and naples yellow – and I began to see how these could be combined with transparent watercolour without the effect being jarring.
(In the past I have tried to replicate the effects the Victorian watercolourists got combining body colour and watercolour with a conspicuous lack of success and ended up with white in my transparent colours which was infuriating, so gave up.)
I am now really looking forward to using these paints and seeing how I can incorporate them into my work. The colours are intense but can be mixed to obtain some wonderfully subtle neutrals. They have a lovely creamy texture that are easy to use and dilute without any great effort. I found this gouache to be excellent quality, great value for money and my only possible grumble is that this is the only set available at present, because I would dearly love to get the larger set with more colours…”.
